Hello and welcome everyone to the first newsletter of Term 2.
I genuinely hope everyone had a safe and relaxing Easter break with your families. Easter is the time that we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ and his promise of eternal life. We celebrate Easter to remember the great sacrifice that Jesus made and although we believe that Jesus is not physically among us, we trust that he is still present in our hearts.
ANZAC DAY
Next Tuesday is ANZAC Day. ANZAC Day celebrations in Quilpie compare to no other celebrations that I have ever experienced.
The celebrations and services begin on Monday night with the Twilight Service at the Quilpie Cemetery followed by a free community dinner held at the Quilpie Bowls Club. The service will begin at 5.45pm and students are encouraged to attend.
Dawn Service will be held at the RSL Memorial Park at 5.45am followed by a free community breakfast.
The ANZAC March and ANZAC Day Community Service will be on Tuesday morning. Students are to assemble at the side of the QCWA Hall at 10.00am to be ready to march at 10.15am. Students form a guard of honour at the entrance to the Hall for Service men and women, Ex-Service men and women and the community to enter. Students then take seats at the front of the Hall; St Finbarr’s will be on the right-hand side (leaving the first two rows of chairs on the right-hand side for Service men and women / Ex-Service men and women). Full formal uniform is to be worn, school shirt, navy shorts or skort, white socks and black shoes, school badges and the navy bucket hats.
District, Regional and State Sport
We have started the school term off with a bang with several students participating or preparing for district, regional and state sport events. Abbie Hoch has travelled to Bundaberg to participate in the State Cricket Carnival. Abbie has been taking brilliant catches resulting in several wickets being taken. We hope she has had a great three days of cricket!
Nate and Digby will be heading to Roma on Monday for Rugby League regional trials. We wish both boys the best of luck. We hope they enjoy the day.
OPEN DAY – 2024 PREP
Next Friday the 28th, April will be our St Finbarr’s Prep 2024 Open Day. We are looking forward to welcoming several families who have indicated their interest in sending their child to St Finbarr’s for Prep in 2024. I am looking forward to meeting the families and students and giving them a tour of our school. If you are a current family who has a child that will be starting Prep in 2024 please consider attending our school Open Day.
Arts Fest
Toowoomba Catholic Schools Office will be conducting an Arts Fest in Week 10 of this term. I will be asking students in year 3 and 4 if they would like to attend. If they indicate that they would like to go I will then be in touch with parents. I will send an email home with more information. As this is the first time the Arts Fest has been held, I will be attending the festival with the students. If your child indicates they would like to attend, and you would also like to attend please let me know.
PPF Meeting
Our next PPF meeting will be held at 5pm on Wednesday 3rd, May all are welcome to attend.
Deadly Choices Program
Deadly Choices will be running their program on a Thursday from weeks 2-9 during Term 2. Our students will walk across to the Quilpie State College with a teacher to participate in the program.

3-6 Classroom News
Round 2 has begun with a pleasantly cooler change. On Thursday we said, ‘goodbye and good luck’ to Miss Kendall for 2 weeks whilst she completes her Prac. experience in Cloncurry. On Monday we welcome Miss Gabby to the G3-6 class and look forward to learning from her as she completes her Prac.
English this Term will be focused on developing narrative writing texts. We will be investigating vocabulary and the ways in which vocab choices can enhance writing. Additionally, students will be developing their understanding of figurative language, onomatopoeia, similes, metaphors and colloquialisms. Stories will then be published using Book Creator and presented to the class.
Math’s this Term will have the students continue to work through math rotations focusing on understanding and skill development. Rotations will be run four days a week and include a 30mins teacher directed session per grade level, small group focus sessions with our School Officer, and independent learning tasks. This Term the children will be consolidating and developing their knowledge in all areas of the math curriculum. It is pleasing to note the number of students who have achieved success with learning their number facts using the Reflex program. Quick recall of basic facts provides children with a sense of confidence with their math sessions.
Athletics is the focus this Term. Students will be rotating through activities focused on skill development in preparation for the Athletics Carnival early Term 3. Students will also be participating in Traditional Games sessions every Thursday.
Looking forward to all the learning and development that is set to happen this Term.

St Finbarr's Student Protection Contacts
It is a legislative requirement that all non-state schools have at least two nominated staff members to whom a student can report the behaviour of another staff member that the student considers inappropriate. We call these specially trained staff members School Student Protection Contacts, or SSPCs. Each SSPC has been nominated by the principal in recognition of their integrity, approachability and knowledge in the area of student protection. Whilst students are encouraged to speak up to any trusted adult in the school community, it is important that they know they can access these specific staff members at any time should they have worries, queries or concerns. You will have noticed posters throughout the school depicting our current SSPCs. The SSPCs are also published on our school website along with information about our student protection processes. In everything we do at St Finbarr's student safety is our highest priority, therefore the SSPCs at our school are key personnel in our overall safeguarding processes. Please see the poster depicting our current SSPC team.
