We are halfway through the school year, and we are looking forward to a lot of activities and exciting times ahead for the term.
School Uniform
As we are now halfway through the year, I wanted to take the opportunity to check in on the student’s uniforms. We have a very informative uniform policy which can be accessed on our school website Policies, procedures and guidelines - St Finbarr's School, Quilpie.
This week I want to let parents know that in our uniform shop we have new sport shorts, these are made from a microfibre material and are a shorter length. They resemble the Canterbury microfibre shorts but are the school uniform. Mary G, Canterbury or any shorts with a logo embroidered on them as well as cargo shorts with cargo pockets are not school uniform. We have a lot of options in our Uniform Shop if you need to top up your children’s uniform kit.
We have almost got 100% of students wearing the correct above ankle black or white socks and 100% of students have their black shoes, that is fantastic. Thank you all for your efforts in ensuring this is happening. Please remember to ensure boys haircuts are neat and tidy and no shorter than a number 2 (as per the uniform policy).
Hair longer than shoulder length must be tied up. All hair ties and ribbons can only be white, navy, or black. A gentle reminder that earrings can only be a small single stud (birth stone, solid silver, gold, pearl, or a sleeper.
School Photos
Our school photos look amazing. A huge thank you to our local photographer for making them look beautiful. Lauran Wendelborn’s photography is very professional, and I know you will love them. Please keep an eye out for a form for photo orders which will come home in the coming weeks.
Bishop Inservice Day – Pupil Free Day
Our teachers and staff travelled to Cunnamulla for the Bishop Inservice Day. The day was a fantastic opportunity for staff to meet our New Bishop, Bishop Ken Howell. Bishop Ken has a strong connection to the South West with family living and working as drovers in Windorah and Quilpie. We also were given the opportunity to listen to keynote speaker Associate Professor Maeve Heaney. She brought a strong message of living with Hope in our communities and the importance of listening to others.
Working Bee
Thank you to the staff Mrs Harris, Mr Harris, Miss Wells and Families Bonseys, Hochs, Tonkins and Horgans for their help at the Working Bee this Sunday. We really appreciated all your help.
District, Regional and State Sport
During week one of this term Ava Horgan travelled to Roma to trial for the South West Girls Rugby League team, she was successful and will now be heading to Townsville for the State Rugby League Carnival, a massive congratulations.
At the beginning of this term James and Ava travelled to Hervey Bay to compete in the State Cross Country. James did an exceptional job and is looking forward to continuing his training and aiming to make the State Team again next year. Ava unfortunately was unwell and unable to finish her race but was feeling better the next day and competed in the Cross Country Relays. We are very proud of Ava and James to have been selected and make the South West Team. A great achievement all round.
This week Digby will be heading to Cairns to compete in the State Soccer Carnival. We wish him all the best and we are sure he will enjoy himself. Good Luck Digby!
On Friday I will be driving the bus to Charleville to take Jess, Abbie, James, Ava and Nate McConnell to the Charleville & District Athletics Carnival. All students have been selected for multiple events and we wish them all the best for the district trials on Friday.
Whole School Camp
Our whole school camp has been booked for Week 10 this term. Please keep and eye out for a Microsoft Form that will be emails and sent in a text message to all parents. We are heading to the Gold Coast and looking forward to taking all the students and staff on this wonderful camp.
Principal Conference and Mary Rutledge
I will be away next week (Week 5) for Principal Conference which is being held in Millmerran. In my absence we are very lucky to have Mary Rutledge coming to help the teachers. The children all enjoy having Mrs Rutledge at school and we are very grateful she is happy to come each term.

Catholic Education Week
Catholic Education Week is celebrated in Catholic schools in Queensland from 23-29 July 2023.
This annual event is held to promote the special ethos of Catholic schools and to highlight the great things that take place in Catholic schools every day.
The theme for this year’s celebrations is: Communities of Faith, Hope and Love.
Last week we celebrated Catholic Education Week as a whole school at Assembly. We listened and sang the song One Faith, One Hope, One Love by Andrew Chinn and all joined in together with a special Catholic Education Week Prayer.
Catholic education strives to make a difference in the lives of those in our schools and in the wider community by challenging young people to live out the message of Jesus and to reach their full potential as compassionate, contributing, life-giving members of society.
There are 312 Catholic schools in Queensland that educate around 160,000 students and employ more than 21,000 teachers and staff, and most will celebrate Catholic Education Week in some way.

P-3 Classroom News
Prep-2 is learning about the geography of our town this term. In Week 1 we went for a walk around town at places near our school and the Grade 1 and 2 children took photos that we will use as we go along. We are also learning about God’s Creation story in religion and having lots of interesting discussions as we read through the story in the Bible. Preps and Grade 1 were thrilled to be introduced to the class Function Machine (thank to Miss Gabby who made it for us). It does amazing things like make things bigger and smaller and can even add 1 and 2! The function machine will help us practice our maths and reading skills. In music we are going to start learning the recorder along with the 3-6 class. Get ready for some great music coming your way!

Another 3-6 Class Fractured Fairy tale!
The Three Little Sheep
Written by Rosie McConnell
In a land far, far, away there lived three little sheep called, Jess, Ruby and Chelsea who lived with their mum.
One day, their mum said, “It is time for you to move away and build your own house.”
Little did they know a hungry dingo had planned to come prowling on them.
So, on that day, the three little sheep left to find a good place build their house. It took them a little bit of time, but they found a good spot and they got to work.
Jess built her home out of hay string. Ruby built her home out of sticks and stones and Chelsea built her home out of rocks and mud.
On the night of the next full moon, the hungry dingo was ready to hunt the three little sheep. The dingo crept over to the little sheep’s hay and string-built house.
The dingo growled, “Open up and if you don’t, I will break down your home!”
Jess refused. So, the dingo broke Jess’s home. Jess ran over to Ruby’s home.
The dingo followed Jess to Ruby’s house and growled, “Open up or I will tear down your house, too”.
Ruby shouted, “Never!”
So, the dingo tore down Ruby’s home as well. Jess and Ruby ran to Chelsea’s home and rushed in just ahead of the dingo.
The dingo came prowling over to Chelsea’s house and growled, “I will rip your house down!”
But Chelsea screamed, “No! This is my home and family!”
The dingo did not care, and he started to scratch Chelsea’s house down with his sharp claws. But Chelsea’s house was made of strong, strong rocks and mud and the dingo could not rip her house down. The dingo’s claws began to fall off because Chelsea ‘s house was so strong.
The dingo went home crying for his lost claws and was never seen again and the three little sheep lived happily altogether in Chelsea’s home.
THE END

After working at St Finbarr's for the past 13 years , Miss Janell took some long service leave and with leave comes travel. Leaving Quilpie in June, Miss Janell has headed West and seems to have packed alot in, but all good things must come to an end and lucky for us they did as Miss Janell is back on deck today. St Finbarr's Student Protection Contacts
It is a legislative requirement that all non-state schools have at least two nominated staff members to whom a student can report the behaviour of another staff member that the student considers inappropriate. We call these specially trained staff members School Student Protection Contacts, or SSPCs. Each SSPC has been nominated by the principal in recognition of their integrity, approachability and knowledge in the area of student protection. Whilst students are encouraged to speak up to any trusted adult in the school community, it is important that they know they can access these specific staff members at any time should they have worries, queries or concerns. You will have noticed posters throughout the school depicting our current SSPCs. The SSPCs are also published on our school website along with information about our student protection processes. In everything we do at St Finbarr's student safety is our highest priority, therefore the SSPCs at our school are key personnel in our overall safeguarding processes. Please see the poster depicting our current SSPC team.
